Overweight is more dangerous in Women

A 10-year study result published in this week’s New England Journal of Medicine found those who were slightly overweight in their 50s were 20 percent to 40 percent more likely to die early and the risk for women is much higher than men.



The research conducted by the U.S. government was based on more than 500,000 adults, which showed that the risk of death increased among women for any amount of weight above the normal range, while for those slightly overweight men, the risk was not higher.



“For women, the risk begins immediately when you hit the overweight range, whereas for men you need to travel somewhat higher into the overweight range to hit that increase,” said Michael F. Leitzmann, a researcher at the National Cancer Institute and the co-author of the article.




“We found that people who are overweight had a modestly increased risk of premature death,” Leitzmann added. This was echoed by researchers at Yonsei University in Seoul, South Korea, and Johns Hopkins University, whose 12-year following-up of one million Korean adults showed that risk of death and cancer increased in people who were overweight.





However, what makes the result a little complex is the problem of smoking, since people who smoke tend to be leaner, and smoking-related illnesses are more killing. Enditem
